True North Sports & Entertainment announces pre-Olympic Exhibition Games
between Switzerland and Belarus at MTS Centre
True North Sports & Entertainment, along with the Province of Manitoba and Sport Manitoba, is pleased to announce today that pre-Olympic hockey will be hosted in Manitoba at MTS Centre on February 9th and 11th, 2010.
International hockey returns to the city as the Switzerland and Belarus Men’s Hockey teams square off for an exhibition series at MTS Centre. Coached by Manitoban Ralph Krueger of Steinbach, Switzerland will play a two-game set against Belarus as a warm up to the 2010 Winter Olympic Games to be held in Vancouver later that month.
The first game will be held on Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at 7:30 p.m. at MTS Centre while the second game will be a “Schools Game” played on Thursday, February 11, 2010 at 11:30 a.m. at MTS Centre. The “Schools Game” ticket package includes a lunch and game-day line-up sheet for any school group in attendance. Registered schools will also be entered in a draw for a chance at having an Olympic athlete visit their school before the event.
This will be the fifth International Hockey event to come to MTS Centre since its inception in 2004. In December of 2004, the venue hosted a three-game exhibition series as a tune up to the 2005 IIHF Under-20 World Championships in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Currently NHL stars, Sidney Crosby, Mike Richards, Ryan Getzlaf and Jeff Carter dazzled the sold-out MTS Centre as Canada handled the Swiss and Finish Junior teams before going on to win the Gold Medal in Grand Forks.
MTS Centre was again on the International scene in 2007 as host to the IIHF World Women’s Hockey Championships. Canada prevailed in the gold medal game beating the USA 5-1 in front of 15,003 fans – making Winnipeggers witness to Canada’s 10th World Hockey Championship title. The MTS Centre also played host to the Women’s Canada vs. U.S.A New Year’s Eve battle in 2005 as well as a Canada -Russia Super Series in 2007.
